How we work / our core values

At Withers & Rogers, we believe that being able to empathise with our clients is essential to a successful and profitable partnership. To this end, we work hard to understand the nature of our clients' business so there is absolute clarity regarding ultimate commercial goals. Our aim therefore is to understand not just their technologies but also their commercial objectives.

For some clients, our technical excellence and ability to protect their intellectual property (IP) is enough; however, others are keen to benefit from our strategic input.

The nature of this strategic input will vary. For some, it will involve finding the best way of developing the IP portfolio, whether it be patents, registered designs, trade marks or a combination of the three. For others, it will involve setting up a system which enables them to identify and evaluate their IP. Other key areas might include invention management, technology mapping to help direct future R&D investment, or assistance in helping to foster a culture of IP awareness throughout an organisation.

Ultimately, whatever the level of involvement, we pride ourselves on quick and commercially focussed advice. We believe in giving straight, succinct answers, in plain English and without jargon. After all, past experience and feedback tells us our clients prefer it that way.

We believe that our ability to meet and often surpass expectations is due to our investment in our people who, in addition to strong academic qualifications, often have cross-industry or ex-patent examiner experience.

Our attitude towards innovation, intellectual property protection, and our clients can be characterised below:

Making money is important! IP protection must be commercially relevant, driving profit. It must not just be an academic, legal exercise.

One size does not fit all. Every business faces different challenges and enjoys different opportunities. Understanding those challenges and opportunities and being flexible in our approach allows us to deliver more effective IP solutions.

You drive, we'll hold the map. By understanding your business goals, we can help direct your efforts, focussing R&D and protecting the output to get you to your destination.

Back winners. Good invention management is about quick and cost effective identification, support and progress of commercially valuable ideas and dropping the time-wasters.

Impatience is good. We like impatient organisations - companies that are not satisfied with doing the current thing well but are looking to do the next thing better and the thing after that better still. Fostering an innovation culture in your business helps to maximise the yield from your efforts.

"We were glad to see that you submitted a tender that was excellent in quality and price, and the Tender Committee were unanimous in their opinion that you should continue to be a preferred patent agent to the University."
