Higher Education & Qualifications

Nicholas has Bachelor of Pharmacy (First Class Honours) and PhD degrees, both from The University of Nottingham. He was the recipient of numerous awards from The University of Nottingham, both for academic performance and original research. He is a Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, a Registered Pharmaceutical Chemist and a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Career to date

Nicholas joined Withers & Rogers in 1999 and became a Partner in 2006. He has previous experience in pharmaceutical research and development, particularly formulation technology and analytical research, with The Glaxo Group. Nicholas has a keen interest in the role of patents at all stages of the pharmaceutical product life cycle.

Personal Skills

Nicholas has a wide breadth of knowledge across the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. He pays close attention to detail but always tries to keep sight of the bigger, commercially-important picture.

Sector Experience

Nicholas' practice involves inventions from all major areas of pharmaceutical research and development. He handles work in the fields of medicinal chemistry and drug design, formulation, new medical indications, radiopharmaceuticals, advanced drug delivery, biopharmaceuticals and biosensors.  He also advises on Supplementary Protection Certificates for medicinal products.

Client Experience

Nicholas works with a number of domestic and overseas clients. He handles patent drafting, prosecution and opposition work for companies in the Takeda Pharmaceutical Group.  He has worked for many years with the Swedish biosensor manufacturer Attana AB and the Portuguese pharmaceutical company BIAL - Portela & Ca. SA.  He handles a variety of pre- and post-grant patent work for the US radiopharmaceutical and diagnostics producer Covidien Ltd - Pharmaceuticals (formerly Tyco Healthcare). Nicholas has also prepared a number of due diligence reports and opinions for various clients in relation to fundraising, licensing deals and acquisitions.
