Philip is European and UK patent attorney, and a Unified Patent Court (UPC) Representative. With extensive experience in managing patent portfolios across a broad spectrum of electrical and electronic technology areas, Philip has worked with a diverse range of clients worldwide. This includes from large multinationals with substantial patent portfolios, small and medium sized entities, and numerous start-ups at various stages of growth. He has particular experience in collaborating closely with in-house IP managers, including CTOs, CSOs and in-house attorneys, to achieve ambitious goals for complex portfolios.

Philip’s technical expertise include drafting and prosecuting patent applications for analog and digital signal processing, ASIC designs, ToF systems and electrical power conversion and metering.  He also posses a wealth of experience in related technology areas such as: telecommunication systems (including SEPs) control technologies, and computer implemented inventions, including encryption, business methods and blockchain related technologies.

Having worked with blockchain technologies since 2015, Philip leads the blockchain and DLT specialist group at Withers & Rogers. He regularly advises clients on the patentability in the UK and Europe of blockchain-related inventions, and on software and business methods more broadly.

Education & background

Philip has a Masters degree in Engineering from the University of Cambridge where he studied a variety of engineering disciplines, from thermodynamics to systems and control. His specialisation was in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, with a particular focus on semiconductor device fabrication and operation. His Masters level research focussed on the optimisation of high power SOI MOSFETs in the forward blocking mode.  Philip entered the patent profession in 2008 and, in March 2023, became one of the first European patent attorneys to be registered as a representative before the UPC.

On a personal note…

Philip enjoys skiing in the winter, cycling in the summer and refurbishing old bicycles in between.
