Education & background
Abbie graduated with a first-class degree and PhD from the University of Leicester, receiving the AstraZeneca Physiology and Pharmacology prize for undergraduate research on ischaemic injury in neonates by electron microscopy. Abbie has a deep understanding of a wide range of technologies from her academic background, starting with a degree in physiology and pharmacology, moving on to a PhD in respiratory medicine, and postdoctoral research in oncology.
Abbie’s PhD focused on the molecular and microbiological characterisation of clinical isolates in asthma and the development of cell culture models of infection. Postdoctoral research included detecting emerging mutations in cfDNA from patients with melanoma, using advanced molecular techniques. Technical expertise gained during academia included qPCR, RT-PCR, automated electrophoresis, flow cytometry, ELISA, cell culture, fluorescence microscopy, DNA barcoding and sequencing, droplet digital PCR, bioinformatics, and electron microscopy
On a personal note…
Abbie has three young children and particularly enjoys running and photography.
