Patent filings rocket in the space industry

27 July 2021

A new study conducted by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) has found overwhelming levels of growth in terms of patent filings in the space industry.

The report shows that since 2010, the number of patent families being filed each year has increased significantly, both globally in general, and in Europe. In fact, the number of space-related patent families being filed per annum is four times higher in 2017 than in 2010.

Globally, the significant filers of cosmonautic technology are addressed in USA and China, and focusing on Europe, the main patent filers are Germany and France. The UK accounts for a smaller proportion, but is still responsible for more filings than most other countries.

The trends identified in this report clearly show that space activities have been rapidly increasing over the past decade, and along with that, protection of those activities by patent savvy businesses.
